Featured here perched on an old silver birch tree stump, the background is blurred to give a greater emphasis on the Woodpecker. There are three species in Britain, the great spotted, lesser spotted & green Woodpecker. 

The Great Spotted is about the size of a blackbird, he can be seen climbing trees around the trunk and makes a distinct drumming sound as he pecks his way into the trunk to find his favorite meal of insects. They also eat nuts & seeds.
